Today, the classic Cuban mojito has been around for centuries, with roots dating back to the 16th century. It is said that the original drink was created by a pirate called El Draque, who was sailing near Havana. Pirates at that time often suffered from scurvy and dysentery, due to a lack of proper nutrition and hygiene. It is believed that El Draque used the mojito to help treat these diseases.
Over time the drink was tweaked and eventually made as a refreshing cocktail called the mojito. The mojito cocktail we know and love typically has white rum, sugar cane, lime juice, mint leaves, and sparkling water.
Another story goes that the beloved author, Ernest Hemingway, enjoyed drinking mojitos regularly at his favorite bar, La Bodeuguit del Medio. His love of mojitos is believed to have played a big role in popularizing the cocktail in the United States.
Whether or not this is true or not, one thing for sure is that it is nearly impossible to learn about the history of mojitos without someone bringing up Hemingway. There are even mojito recipes named after him today as the drink continues to be a favorite across the country.
